The Atlantic Division of the US Naval Facilities Engineering Command, in conjunction with the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTN) initiated the multi-batch, full-scale bioremediation of soil impacted with organic explosive compounds (OE) at the WPNSTN.
Daramend® reagent was applied ex situ to soil in a covered treatment cell containing approximately 1,200 yd3 per batch. Small quantities of Daramend were then applied in situ to additional impacted soil using excavation equipment.
The ex situ treatment resulted in TNT concentration reduced from 10,000 mg/kg to less than 15 mg/kg and RDX concentration reduced from 210 mg/k to 4 mg/k during treatment of the first batch and 255 mg/kg to 1 mg/kg during the second batch. The in situ treatment resulted in TNT concentration reduced from 10,884 mg/kg to 200 mg/kg and in RDX concentration reduced from 400 mg/kg to 1 mg/kg.
